Valhalla Delay Tape Modes — NAB, WOW, Flutter Explained

Valhalla Delay has three tape modes simulating different aspects of vintage tape machine behavior. Here is what each does and the best settings for each.

What tape delay emulation does

Vintage tape echo machines (Roland Space Echo, Echoplex, Maestro) recorded audio onto a loop of tape and played it back with a fixed delay determined by tape speed and head spacing. The characteristics: frequency roll-off (tape is band-limited), saturation (tape saturates on transients), and mechanical instability (wow and flutter from motor speed variations).

NAB mode

Named after the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) tape equalization standard. Models a well-maintained tape machine with controlled frequency response. The most musical of the tape modes — warm but not excessively filtered. Best settings: Delay Time 375ms (dotted 8th at 100 BPM), Feedback 25%, Mix 20%, Modulation Rate 0.6 Hz, Depth 0.12. Use on vocals, guitars, and lead synths.

WOW mode

Simulates tape wow — slow, cyclical pitch variation caused by inconsistent tape motor speed. More pronounced pitch variation than NAB. Best settings: same delay timing as NAB but increase Modulation Depth to 0.30-0.45. Creates the distinctive "warbling" character of worn tape. Use on sustained pads and ambient textures.

Flutter mode

Simulates tape flutter — faster, more irregular pitch variation caused by capstan and pinch roller inconsistencies. Sounds more mechanically organic than WOW. Best settings: Modulation Rate 2-4 Hz, Depth 0.10-0.15. The flutter is subtle at these settings — noticeable on sustained notes, less obvious on rhythmic material. Use on acoustic sources for vintage warmth.

Combining tape modes with saturation

For maximum tape authenticity, chain RC-20 Retro Color (Distort module, Tape character, 15% mix) before Valhalla Delay's tape mode. The saturation enters the delay feedback, creating accumulated harmonic distortion on each repeat — mimicking how tape machines progressively saturate signal on each pass.
